NPL Canada - Industrial Drive, Hamilton Project
Area: Industrial Dr. & Depew St. Hamilton, Ontario
Division: Rentals
Contractor: NPL Canada
Owner: Enbridge

Challenge:

A sidewalk closure was necessary to facilitate the replacement of a gas main located 2 meters off the sidewalk. This required a protected detour for pedestrians to ensure their safety. Additionally, heavy equipment was to be operated near the pedestrian pathway, adding to the complexity of the situation. Finally, both ends of the walkway had to be fully accessible, meeting all AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act) standards.

Solution:

Pedestrians were safely rerouted from the sidewalk onto the roadway using Concrete Jersey Barriers and a SLED TL-2 Crash System to create a protected zone. The Urban Barrier with Active Transportation (AT) Fencing added another layer of safety between the work zone and pedestrians. To ensure accessibility, AODA-compliant portable ramps were installed, allowing smooth passage for everyone. A partial lane closure was implemented with a TC-12 Arrow Board to redirect traffic, and a Portable Variable Message Sign (PVMS) was placed 400 meters before the site to provide advance warning of the closure. This setup ensured pedestrian safety, maintained accessibility, and effectively communicated the traffic changes to drivers.

Outcome:

By utilizing a combination of products, we were able to achieve a safe, secure, and accessible walkway for pedestrians to traverse with confidence within very close proximity of a work zone.
