Project: University Avenue Infrastructure Upgrades
Location: Downtown Toronto
Solutions: Urban Barrier & AT Fencing
Contractor: Kore Infrastructure Group
Owner: City of Toronto
Challenge
A 3-kilometre stretch of University Avenue was reduced to a single lane for major infrastructure upgrades. These included replacing an old water main, enhancing bike lane safety, adding green infrastructure, and resurfacing the road. University Avenue is a critical road in Downtown Toronto. This thoroughfare hosts major institutions like Queen's Park, Osgoode Hall, and the U.S. Embassy. Additionally, it encompasses the area known as "Hospital Row," home to several leading hospitals in North America. Kore's project demanded meticulous management of the constant flow of heavy pedestrian traffic. Balancing safety and efficiency was vital, as even the slightest oversight could have disrupted this highly dynamic urban artery.
Solution
Traditional fencing solutions were quickly ruled out due to their associated risks, such as tripping hazards and weather vulnerabilities. Instead, the Urban Barrier and Active Transportation (AT) Fencing was chosen. This innovative system, featuring interlocking, reconfigurable barriers, provided the necessary protection and flexibility, allowing construction to proceed smoothly. The Urban Barrier’s galvanized steel base reduced trip hazards, while the AT Fencing maintained security and a professional appearance around the hospitals.
Outcome
Site security and pedestrian safety, particularly managing the continuous flow of cyclists and bike couriers, were effectively ensured with the comprehensive protection provided by the Urban Barrier and AT Fencing. By utilizing this system, potential bottlenecks, delays, and accidents were successfully avoided. Additionally, the project benefited from cost savings by renting all the required equipment, ensuring both efficiency and success throughout the project.
